India’s electric mobility and EV infrastructure have received another policy boost from the Centre. Union Cabinet Minister of Heavy Industries (and Steel), H. D. Kumaraswamy, has announced fresh financial support for installing 1,243 EV charging stations across Karnataka.
The initiative aims to strengthen the state’s public charging network and accelerate EV adoption in both urban and semi-urban areas.
The announcement comes as India accelerates investments in clean mobility, EV infrastructure, battery manufacturing and sustainable transport systems under its broader green energy transition plans.

Funding Push Targets Faster EV Charging Network Expansion
The new funding support will have charging stations deployed across multiple locations in Karnataka. With ₹2,000 crore earmarked specifically for EV Public Charging Stations (EVPCS) across the country, this project will improve charging accessibility for private EV owners, commercial fleets and public transport operators in Karnataka.
Officials said the initiative is designed to address one of the biggest concerns in EV adoption: limited EV charging infrastructure. The expansion is expected to improve connectivity for long-distance EV travel while also supporting growing demand from electric two-wheelers, cars and commercial vehicles.
Karnataka has remained one of India’s leading EV-focused states, particularly due to the presence of major technology companies, manufacturing hubs and startup ecosystems in cities such as Bengaluru.
The latest announcement aligns with India’s wider clean mobility targets and the Centre’s efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels through electrification of transport systems.

Karnataka to Strengthen India’s Position in EV Ecosystem
Industry observers view the latest charging infrastructure rollout as part of Karnataka’s long-term strategy to strengthen its position in India’s EV manufacturing and mobility ecosystem.
The state has already attracted investments from EV makers, battery technology firms and mobility startups over the past few years. Analysts say expanding public charging access will be important for sustaining EV sales momentum across India.
The development also comes amid rising competition among Indian states to attract green mobility investments and clean-tech manufacturing projects.
With EV registrations continuing to rise nationally, policymakers are increasingly focusing on charging accessibility, battery ecosystems and grid readiness to support the next phase of electric mobility growth.
