China has introduced its first general-purpose household robot, called “Shiguang S1,” in Wuhan’s Optics Valley. The robot was launched by Chinese robotics company GigaBrain. It is designed to help families with everyday home activities.
Shiguang S1 Can Cook, Fold Clothes, and Help Elderly People
The Shiguang S1 is built for regular home use instead of factory work. The robot can fold clothes, cook meals, and clean dining tables. It can also talk to elderly people and provide support at home.

The company said the robot can learn new tasks and adjust to different home situations. This makes it more advanced than older robots that only follow fixed instructions.
AI-Powered Robot Uses Intelligent Learning System
According to GigaBrain, the robot runs on its self-developed embodied AI model. This system helps the robot understand tasks and react naturally inside homes.
Ye Yun, Vice President of R&D at the company, said traditional factory robots usually work with pre-set commands. In comparison, the Shiguang S1 can plan actions on its own and respond to changing situations.
Safety Features and Early User Testing
The robot also includes a safety system. If it accidentally touches a person or pet while moving, it stops immediately to avoid injury.

Families in Wuhan can now apply to become early ‘seed users’ through the ‘Shiguang Vision’ WeChat account and the company’s official application platform.
China Expands AI Robotics and Smart Home Technology
The launch of Shiguang S1 highlights China’s growing focus on AI robotics, elderly care technology, and smart home systems. The company also plans to launch its next-generation “GigaBrain 1” model in the third quarter of 2026.
