Apple has introduced Apple HomeView, a new smart home display designed to bring entertainment, communication and home controls together in one device.

Priced at $299 in the US, HomeView features a 7-inch Liquid Retina display and is designed to be shared by everyone in the household while still offering a personalised experience for individual users. It can sit on a tabletop or be mounted on a wall, making it suitable for spaces such as kitchens, hallways and bedrooms.

The device is also one of Apple’s latest products built around Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Apple says the new version of Siri is more capable and conversational, with broader knowledge, onscreen awareness and the ability to use personal context when paired with a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad.

What is Apple HomeView?

Apple HomeView is designed to act as a central screen for the home. Users can play music, make FaceTime calls, check information, monitor cameras and control compatible smart home devices through the touchscreen or Siri.

The 7-inch Liquid Retina display uses True Tone and automatic brightness adjustment. Its interface can also change depending on how far the user is from the screen, showing simpler information from across the room and more detail when they move closer.

HomeView comes in four colours: silver, starlight, rose pink and space grey. Apple is also offering a separate wall-mounted model in silver and space grey.

HomeView can recognise up to six people

One of the main features of HomeView is its multi-user experience. The device can recognise up to six people and provide each person with their own personalised Home Screen, apps and widgets. Personal information in apps such as Messages and Calendar is kept separate, while shared photos and music can still be enjoyed by everyone in the household.

This means a shared HomeView can work differently for each member of the family without requiring separate devices.

Siri AI brings a more personal experience

Apple has built Siri AI into HomeView as a key part of the experience. Users can ask Siri questions about a wide range of topics, have more natural conversations and use it for music discovery. Siri AI also has onscreen awareness, allowing it to understand what is being displayed on HomeView.

When connected to an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, Siri AI can use personal context from apps such as Messages and Calendar. It can also surface relevant information and take actions across supported apps.

Apple says conversations can move between HomeView and other devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, with conversation history privately synced through iCloud.

HomeView doubles as an entertainment hub

HomeView is not limited to smart home controls. Apple has equipped it with a custom audio system featuring two full-range drivers, a down-firing woofer and two passive radiators.

The system supports Spatial Audio and uses computational audio to adjust loudness and bass response. Users can listen to Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Apple News, watch Apple TV content and use compatible third-party audio and video apps.

HomeView can also work with other HomeView, HomePod, HomePod mini and AirPlay-compatible speakers to create a multiroom audio system.

FaceTime, Messages and kitchen assistance

Apple is also positioning HomeView as a communication device. FaceTime with Center Stage keeps participants in the frame as they move around the room. Users can read and respond to Messages using their voice or the onscreen keyboard.

The device also supports Intercom, allowing users to send announcements to another room or across the home through compatible HomeView and HomePod devices. In the kitchen, HomeView can turn recipes from the web into step-by-step instructions. Users can also operate timers without touching the display and get help with ingredient tracking while cooking.

A smart home dashboard

HomeView is designed to become a central control point for compatible smart home accessories. Users can use Siri or the touchscreen to control lights and thermostats, lock doors, close blinds and view security camera feeds. The Home Camera face can display up to nine camera feeds at once, which could be useful for checking pets, deliveries or activity around the home.

With a supported iCloud+ subscription, compatible cameras can also identify people, familiar faces, pets, packages and vehicles. HomeView can provide notifications when someone arrives at the front door and can describe what happened in supported HomeKit Secure Video recordings.

The device can also detect the sound of smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and send alerts to an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

Privacy is at the centre

Apple says privacy and security were built into HomeView from the beginning. HomeView and its A18 chip use Secure Exclaves to process camera and microphone data separately from the rest of the system. Apple says data processed in these protected environments cannot be accessed by HomeView software, apps, the user or Apple.

Personal information is also restricted to the recognised user. For example, content from Messages and Calendar is only shown when the enrolled person’s face is recognised and their paired iPhone or iPad is present and has recently been unlocked.

Siri requests can be processed on the device or through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system. Apple says data processed through Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple.

Apple HomeView price and availability

Apple HomeView costs $299 in the US. Pre-orders began on October 13, with availability starting November 13. It will be available in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, the UK and the US, among other markets. The wall-mounted version is also priced at $299 in the US, while its purpose-built mounting options are sold separately.

Apple HomeView setup and multi-user support require a compatible iPhone or iPad running the latest software. Siri AI is currently available in beta through HomeView software version 27.2.

With HomeView, Apple is expanding its smart home ambitions beyond speakers and streaming devices. The new display brings Siri AI, personalisation, entertainment, communication and home controls into one screen, giving Apple users another way to interact with their connected home.
