Anthropic AI has taken its most advanced models offline following a US government directive restricting access to foreign nationals. This marks one of the most significant interventions yet in the fast-growing AI sector.
The decision affects Anthropic’s latest models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, which the company said were subject to export control measures issued by US authorities on national security grounds.
Rather than attempt to separate eligible and restricted users, Anthropic opted to suspend access entirely.

US Order Triggers Global Shutdown
According to reports, the US government directed Anthropic to block access to the two advanced models for foreign nationals. This includes those located within the United States.
The move stems from concerns that safeguards built into the systems could potentially be bypassed, allowing the technology to assist in identifying software vulnerabilities.
“It was not provided with detailed evidence behind the national security concerns. However, the company acknowledged that officials believe certain protections in the models could be circumvented through so-called “jailbreak” techniques,” said Anthropic.

Growing Focus on AI Export Controls
The episode highlights a broader shift in how governments are approaching advanced AI systems. Until recently, export controls were largely associated with semiconductors and specialised hardware.
The latest order suggests that leading AI models are increasingly being viewed as strategic technologies with national security implications. The restrictions have also drawn attention from policymakers outside the United States. The sudden suspension has reignited debate around technological sovereignty and dependence on a small number of US-based AI providers.
Businesses, developers and governments across several regions are now evaluating alternative AI platforms and domestic capabilities as access to frontier models becomes increasingly tied to geopolitical considerations.
Anthropic’s move may be temporary, but it sends a clear signal to the wider industry. As AI systems become more powerful, access will be shaped by innovation and competition, as well as by national security and global policy decisions.
