India’s indigenous fighter aircraft programme has received another boost after the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) transferred two key thermal management technologies to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
The move is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), India’s planned fifth-generation stealth fighter.
The transfer covers advanced thermal management and liquid cooling technologies developed by DRDO’s Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL).
These systems play an important role in managing the heat generated by modern combat aircraft, ensuring that sensitive onboard electronics continue to operate reliably during demanding missions.

Why these Technologies Matter for AMCA?
As fighter aircraft become more advanced, they generate significantly more heat from radar systems, mission computers, electronic warfare equipment and other onboard electronics.
If this heat is not controlled properly, it can affect both system performance and aircraft reliability.
The technologies transferred to BHEL include compact heat exchangers and liquid cooling systems designed to disperse this heat without adding excessive weight or taking up valuable space inside the aircraft.
This is particularly important for stealth platforms such as the AMCA, where every component must be compact, efficient and carefully integrated.
The technology transfer is expected to help establish an indigenous production ecosystem for these specialised systems, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and supporting the government’s broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

BHEL’s Role Expands Beyond Power Equipment
Traditionally known for manufacturing power generation equipment, BHEL has steadily expanded its presence in India’s defence and aerospace sectors.
By acquiring these technologies, the public sector company will now manufacture critical thermal management systems for future defence platforms.
The agreement also further DRDO’s growing focus on transferring laboratory-developed technologies to Indian industry, enabling faster production and wider industrial participation in strategic programmes.
The AMCA programme remains one of India’s most ambitious defence projects. Once operational, the twin-engine stealth fighter is expected to strengthen the Indian Air Force’s future combat capabilities with advanced sensors, low-observable features and next-generation avionics.
