Google is expanding its artificial intelligence-led overhaul of search with a redesigned “AI Mode”, signalling a deeper shift in how users discover information online.
The update, unveiled during the company’s latest product announcements, places conversational AI responses more prominently in Google Search as it faces growing competition from generative AI platforms and changing user behaviour.
The redesign introduces a more interactive search experience where users can ask follow-up questions, receive summarised responses and navigate web links within a chatbot-style interface. The move comes as Google accelerates efforts to defend its dominance in online search while integrating generative AI into its core products.

Google Search Moves Towards Conversational AI
The updated AI Mode builds on Google’s earlier AI Overviews feature and aims to make search more interactive and conversational.
Instead of displaying only traditional blue links, the interface now delivers AI-generated summaries alongside source links, images and contextual recommendations.
Google said the feature is designed to handle more complex and layered queries. Users can continue conversations within search without restarting each search. The company is also introducing deeper integrations with tools such as Gmail, Maps and shopping services to personalise responses.
The rollout reflects the fierce competition among technology firms to embed generative AI into consumer internet products. Companies, including OpenAI and Microsoft, have intensified competition in AI-assisted search and productivity tools over the past year.
Google has maintained that web publishers and creators will continue to benefit from traffic referrals through linked sources embedded in AI-generated answers.

Publishers, SEO Industry Face Fresh Traffic Concerns
The redesign is expected to deepen concerns among digital publishers and the search optimisation industry over declining website traffic from traditional search listings. Several publishers have argued that AI-generated summaries reduce the need for users to click through to original websites.
Industry analysts say the growing use of AI summaries could reshape search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies, digital advertising models and content discovery patterns. Media companies and independent publishers are increasingly reassessing audience acquisition strategies as AI-led search experiences become mainstream.
The changes also come amid heightened global regulatory scrutiny of the influence of large technology firms in online advertising and search markets.
Google has not disclosed a full global rollout timeline for all AI Mode features, though the company indicated wider expansion across markets in phases during 2026.
