IIT Bombay, known for producing dozens of engineers and technologists, has now launched an in-house AI company. The institute registered the BharatGen Technology Foundation on 7 November 2025, with its headquarters located right inside the Powai campus. Rather than being a student start-up or a faculty-led project module, the control remains with the institution this time.

IndiaAI Mission: A New Kind of its Kind

With the development creating a buzz in the market, what stands out immediately is that IIT Bombay is not just experimenting; this time, it is committing. It is a long-term, institution-led investment into India’s AI landscape. Supported initially with ₹235 crore and further boosted under the IndiaAI Mission, BharatGen has already become the highest-funded AI initiative in the country. This is India placing a strong, confident bet on sovereign AI and IIT Bombay leading the front this time.

What exactly is BharatGen trying to build?

In simple terms, BharatGen wants to develop AI that honestly sounds, thinks, reads, and understands like India. And we all will agree that this has been overdue for a long time. It is building large language models (LLMs) and multimodal AI that can interpret text, speech, documents and visuals. This means AI finally begins to understand India the way we actually communicate. The aim is to support 22+ Indian languages, making it one of the most ambitious multilingual AI initiatives worldwide.

Moreover, BharatGen is built for real-world scale and not just academic papers. IIT also plans to expand BharatGen to lighter, distilled versions of its models. This would let Indian start-ups, creators and organisations adopt AI without burning through massive resources.

What Comes Next?

BharatGen is working with a massive consortium of IITs, IIITs and research partners across the country to accelerate the development of Indian-language LLMs. Over the subsequent few phases, you can expect more Indian languages to roll out, advanced multimodal features, enterprise-ready releases and multiple lightweight indigenous AI models for broader adoption.
If everything stays on track, BharatGen could become the most influential public AI initiative India has ever built, positioning the country as a global force in deep-tech innovation.
