OpenAI has launched a major update – the rollout of GPT-5.1. It is an upgraded version designed to deliver more human-like dialogue, quicker responses, and smarter context handling for ChatGPT users.
The new release includes two distinct modes: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. The Instant mode focuses on producing faster, more accurate replies that closely follow user instructions. Meanwhile, Thinking handles simpler operations with improved speed while maintaining better coherence in longer or more complex conversations.
ChatGPT will automatically switch between these modes depending on the user’s query. Both versions are set to roll out gradually over the next week. However, earlier GPT-5 legacy versions will remain accessible under the “legacy model” section for three months before being retired.

Customisation options are now available
To enhance user experience, OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s customisation options. Users can now select from eight personality styles — Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. These presets allow individuals and professionals to tailor the chatbot’s tone and conversational flow according to their needs.
OpenAI is also testing a new feature that will let users fine-tune ChatGPT’s communication style directly through settings. This option will be introduced gradually to select users before a wider release.
According to OpenAI’s Applications CEO Fidji Simo, the company’s decision to diversify ChatGPT’s tone stems from its massive user base of over 800 million people. A single communication style, she explained, can no longer serve such a broad and varied audience effectively.
The GPT-5.1 launch follows the debut of GPT-5 earlier this year, which received mixed feedback. Some users felt the improvements were incremental compared to previous updates, prompting OpenAI to re-enable GPT-4o access soon after.

Microsoft’s Anthropic
Meanwhile, Microsoft — OpenAI’s strategic partner — is reportedly exploring additional AI models developed by Anthropic. These are expected to be integrated into tools like Copilot Researcher, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Studio, and a new Office Agent for automating Word and PowerPoint tasks.
The release of GPT-5.1 also comes on the heels of ChatGPT Atlas — a recently introduced AI-powered web browser available in “agent mode” for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. Together, these updates highlight OpenAI’s continued push to make AI interaction more intuitive, responsive, and personal.
