Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the scheme had grown beyond its original plan. The government had initially expected around 60 companies to be approved under the ECMS, but the number has now reached 106.

Vaishnaw said the next priority is to ensure that approved projects move quickly from paper to actual manufacturing. He said the government is closely tracking construction and the start of production at these facilities. According to him, production has already started at 38 projects, while another 16 projects are under construction.

The minister also pointed to the wider range of products now being made in India. The ECMS initially focused on finished products and components, but approvals are now moving further into raw materials and manufacturing equipment. Projects now cover products including lasers, transducers, speaker modules, antennas, printed circuit boards, relays and enclosures.

India Pushes For More Domestic Electronics Manufacturing

Three companies have also received approval to manufacture capital equipment in India. Vaishnaw has asked industry associations including ELCINA, ICEA and MAIT to conduct workshops to help expand domestic manufacturing of such equipment.

The government says India is gradually reducing its dependence on imported electronics components. According to Vaishnaw, the country currently meets around 45% of its PCB demand and has started exporting PCBs. India also meets about 60% of its demand for lithium-ion cells used in digital applications and around 75% of connector demand.

The ECMS was approved by the Union Cabinet in March 2025 with an outlay of ₹22,919 crore. The scheme provides incentives linked to investment and production across electronics components, sub-assemblies, capital equipment and other supply-chain products, particularly in areas where India has a high dependence on imports.

The latest approvals mark another step in the government’s push to build a more complete electronics manufacturing ecosystem in India, moving beyond assembly and finished products towards components, raw materials and the machinery needed to make them.
