India’s Chip Manufacturing Plans Head to Production from Approvals
The India Semiconductor Mission, launched in 2021 to establish a domestic chip industry, has now entered the production phase. The initiative has attracted massive investments, from semiconductor fabrication to chip packaging & design projects.
Several facilities are progressing from construction to commercial operations, indicating that India’s focus is shifting from announcing incentives to delivering manufacturing output.
Industry analysts suggest this is an important stage because it demonstrates that government-backed investments are translating into operational facilities rather than remaining on paper.
The programme has drawn investments from global and domestic companies through a mix of fabrication plants, Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) units and Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities, helping expand India’s role across different parts of the global semiconductor supply chain.

Semiconductors are important components found in smartphones, laptops, electric vehicles, telecom equipment, consumer electronics & AI infrastructure.
Growing domestic production is expected to improve supply chain resilience while supporting India’s broader Make in India and Digital India initiatives.
The government has also diversified its long-term strategy through India Semiconductor Mission 2.0. The aim is to strengthen chip design, semiconductor equipment, materials manufacturing, research and workforce development alongside fabrication. The country’s semiconductor market is projected to reach $100–110 billion by 2030, underlining the scale of future demand.
India’s semiconductor push has reached a point where execution will matter more than announcements. As manufacturing ramps up and additional projects become operational, the industry’s next test will be its ability to deliver consistent production, attract global customers and establish India as a reliable link in the worldwide semiconductor supply chain.
