India’s semiconductor ambitions are moving beyond chip design and imports. The country is gradually building capabilities across manufacturing, packaging, testing, technology and supply chains.

Against this backdrop, semiconductor company Nexperia and Tata Electronics have announced a strategic partnership covering multiple stages of semiconductor manufacturing in India. The partnership brings together Nexperia’s semiconductor expertise and Tata Electronics’ growing manufacturing capabilities. It is aimed at establishing longer-term production pathways while supporting a more resilient semiconductor supply chain.

Nexperia ships more than 100 billion products globally each year, making its entry into deeper manufacturing collaboration in India significant for the country’s developing semiconductor ecosystem.

Partnership covers three areas of semiconductor manufacturing

The agreement between Nexperia and Tata Electronics is built around three broad areas: front-end wafer fabrication, back-end assembly and testing, and technology and ecosystem development.

Rather than focusing on a single manufacturing stage, the companies plan to collaborate across different parts of the semiconductor value chain. This includes semiconductor wafers at the manufacturing stage, followed by assembly and testing of finished semiconductor products. The companies will also work together on technology and innovation as the partnership develops.

Nexperia MOSFET production planned at Dholera fab

One of the key areas of the agreement is front-end manufacturing. Nexperia and Tata Electronics are laying the groundwork for the production of Nexperia’s MOSFET portfolio at Tata Electronics’ upcoming semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat.

The Dholera facility is part of Tata Electronics’ plans to establish semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in India. The collaboration with Nexperia could provide a pathway for its discrete semiconductor products to be manufactured locally.

MOSFETs are widely used in electronic and electrical systems for controlling and switching power. Their applications span several areas of modern electronics, making their manufacturing an important part of the wider semiconductor supply chain.

Assembly and testing collaboration in Assam

The partnership also extends to the back-end of semiconductor manufacturing. Nexperia and Tata Electronics will collaborate on the assembly and testing of Nexperia’s discrete semiconductor products at Tata Electronics’ packaging facility in Assam.

Semiconductor assembly and testing are critical stages between chip manufacturing and the final product. Building these capabilities in India can help create a more complete domestic semiconductor manufacturing chain rather than relying heavily on overseas facilities for later-stage processing. For Nexperia, the partnership is also intended to create greater manufacturing flexibility and additional production options as its business grows.

Building a wider semiconductor ecosystem

The companies said the partnership is designed as a long-term framework rather than a standalone manufacturing arrangement. Alongside wafer fabrication and assembly and testing, the agreement includes technology collaboration, innovation and ecosystem development.

This broader approach comes as India is seeking to expand its semiconductor capabilities across fabs, packaging, design, materials, research and development and supporting supply chains. The government’s Semicon 2.0 programme has further strengthened this push, with a focus on expanding India’s capabilities across the semiconductor value chain.

For Tata Electronics, partnerships with established global semiconductor companies can help connect its emerging manufacturing infrastructure with international technology and supply networks. For Nexperia, deeper manufacturing cooperation in India offers another route to expand production capacity and strengthen supply chain resilience.

What the Nexperia-Tata Electronics partnership means for India

The partnership is notable because it covers both front-end and back-end semiconductor manufacturing. The Dholera collaboration focuses on wafer fabrication, while the Jagiroad facility will support assembly and testing. Together, the two areas represent important stages in the semiconductor production process.

As more global semiconductor companies explore manufacturing partnerships in India, such collaborations could help the country develop capabilities beyond chip design and assembly. The immediate focus is on Nexperia’s MOSFET portfolio and discrete semiconductor products. The longer-term objective, however, is broader: creating scalable manufacturing pathways and contributing to a globally competitive semiconductor ecosystem in India.

India’s semiconductor story is therefore increasingly shifting from bringing chips into the country to building more of the production chain at home. The Nexperia-Tata Electronics partnership is another step in that transition.
