India has launched validation trials of a 2% isobutanol-diesel blend in commercial vehicles. This initiative could pave the way for the country’s first diesel biofuel programme after earlier attempts to blend ethanol with diesel failed to gain traction. The government-backed project brings together key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Praj Industries, and leading commercial vehicle manufacturers.

The objective is to evaluate how the blended fuel performs under real-world operating conditions before any decision is made on a wider rollout.
Tata Motors to Begin Pilot Trials
Tata Motors will be among the first manufacturers to participate in the programme. The company plans to begin pilot trials during the current quarter once BPCL supplies the blended fuel. Speaking on the sidelines of the Investor Day media roundtable, Tata Motors Executive Director Girish Wagh confirmed the company’s participation in the project.
“We are working with BPCL to provide the blended fuel, and we will start trials in this quarter,” Wagh said. The trials will focus on key performance parameters such as engine efficiency, durability, fuel consumption, and overall vehicle performance.
Government Adopts Collaborative Approach
According to Wagh, the government has maintained a consultative approach while developing alternative fuel strategies for the automotive sector.

“The government has been very consultative and participative on all these matters,” he said. The collaborative framework has allowed fuel producers, automakers, research institutions, and policymakers to work together in assessing the viability of new fuel technologies.

The validation programme is expected to generate critical data on the suitability of isobutanol-diesel blends for commercial vehicle applications. Researchers and industry partners will study how the fuel affects engine performance, emissions, maintenance requirements, and long-term reliability.
