Indian Railways Deploys AI Tools and Smart Monitoring to Improve Network Safety
Indian Railways has introduced AI-powered smart monitoring and machine-vision inspection systems to detect faults in trains and improve network safety through real-time alerts and predictive maintenance.

Indian Railways has decided to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and smart monitoring technologies across its network to strengthen safety & improve operations. The move is part of a broader push to modernise the railway system through digital tools and predictive monitoring.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the new systems rely on machine vision and automated inspection technologies that monitor train components while trains are in motion. These systems capture high-resolution images of rolling stock and analyse them in real time to detect faults such as loose or missing parts. Once a defect is detected, alerts are automatically sent to railway staff, enabling quick preventive action before a failure occurs.

Officials say adopting AI-driven monitoring reduces the need for manual inspections and improves response times, helping railway personnel identify potential risks earlier in the operating cycle.

AI-Based Inspection Systems to Detect Faults in Real Time

The initiative uses the Machine Vision-Based Inspection System (MVIS) at a central location to monitor the condition of train components at inspection points. Cameras installed along the track capture detailed images beneath moving trains. AI software analyses these images to identify anomalies such as hanging components, structural damage, or equipment defects.

If irregularities are detected, the system immediately sends alerts to control rooms and maintenance teams. This allows railway staff to intervene before faults escalate into operational failures or safety incidents.

The technology is being introduced through collaboration with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL). Officials say the deployment marks a shift toward predictive maintenance, where data and automated inspections help anticipate problems rather than react to breakdowns.

Indian Railways has been expanding the use of digital safety tools in recent years, including AI-based surveillance, predictive maintenance platforms, and automated inspection systems. Together, these technologies aim to improve reliability across one of the world’s largest rail networks while supporting safer train operations.
