India’s first operational bullet train section, connecting Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat, is expected to begin services in 2027, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed.

The stretch forms part of the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor and will mark the country’s first experience of travelling at speeds of up to 320 kmph.

The minister said construction on the project has picked up pace, with major civil works now advancing across Gujarat. The full Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will be completed in phases as work progresses in both Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Surat-Bilimora to Become India’s First Bullet Train Route

The Surat-Bilimora section has been selected as the first operational stretch because construction has advanced faster than on other parts of the corridor. Once opened, it will introduce India’s first high-speed rail service capable of running at a maximum speed of 320 kmph.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project expands beyond 508 kilometres & includes 12 stations.

Built using Japan’s Shinkansen technology, the corridor is designed to significantly cut travel time between the two cities while offering a safer and more reliable transport option.

Officials have said the line is being developed with dedicated high-speed infrastructure, including elevated viaducts, bridges, tunnels and modern stations.

Construction Crosses Key Milestones

According to the Railway Ministry, the project has achieved several construction milestones over the past year. More than 300 kilometres of viaducts have already been completed, while track laying has also begun on completed sections.

Work is progressing simultaneously on stations, bridges and depots. The project also includes the country’s first undersea rail tunnel, which forms part of the alignment between Mumbai and Thane.

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), which is implementing the project, has accelerated construction after land acquisition challenges delayed the initial timeline.

A Major Push for India’s High-Speed Rail Network

The bullet train project is being developed with financial and technical support from Japan and is widely seen as India’s biggest leap into high-speed rail infrastructure.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the first commercial operations between Surat and Bilimora in 2027 would represent a major milestone for Indian Railways and the country’s transport network. The remaining sections of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will open in phases as construction reaches completion.

The 2027 launch will serve as the first real test of India’s high-speed rail ambitions.

If delivered on schedule, the project will reshape intercity travel, strengthen confidence in infrastructure, and pave the way for future bullet train corridors across the country.
