Pune has put the brakes on the rapid expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging network. Authorities are reassessing demand, utilisation levels and long-term viability.

The move signals a broader recalibration in India’s EV infrastructure rollout. In the current phase, growth is increasingly aligned with real-time usage patterns rather than paper-based projections.

Low utilisation prompts rethink of EV charging rollout

According to civic authorities’ data, several public EV charging stations across Pune are operating below expected capacity. Despite early momentum driven by policy push & private participation, footfall remains low.

The gap between installed infrastructure and real-time usage has raised concerns about the sustainability of these stations. With charging operators flagging low returns on investment, some stations are reportedly witnessing minimal daily usage.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is now evaluating whether to pause further expansion until demand stabilises. Industry stakeholders say that EV adoption in the city, while growing, has not yet reached levels required to support dense charging networks.

Policy recalibration and focus on demand-driven installations

Authorities are shifting focus to optimising existing infrastructure rather than adding new EV charging stations. This includes better charger placement and improved accessibility. Integration with high-traffic areas, such as commercial hubs and residential clusters, is also important.

Experts suggest aligning infrastructure rollout with vehicle adoption trends to avoid underutilised assets.

Pune’s approach mirrors a cautious shift seen in other urban centres, where the emphasis is on demand-led expansion, operational efficiency, and sustainable business models for EV charging networks.
