The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s NXTGN Startup Factory to boost the development of the state’s deep-tech startup ecosystem. The agreement was announced at the Huddle Global 2025 festival in Kovalam.

Under this partnership, KSUM and the German consortium plan to work together to support deep-tech founders in Kerala. The intent is to make advanced research and intellectual property more accessible to startups. This supports high-growth ventures in emerging technology domains.

Redefining Research for Startups:
While Indian startups excel at application-level, deeper collaboration with research institutions could bridge gaps in early-stage tech innovation.

“The initiative enables Kerala startups to refine research and translate real-world solutions and scalable products.”

– Anoop Ambika, CEO, KSUM

The agreement aims to create 300+ startups across Kerala and Germany. A steering committee and working group involving government officials and ecosystem stakeholders will guide the final implementation. Officials outlined it as part of Kerala’s broader plan to strengthen its startup landscape and attract investments, talent and global partnerships. The state already counts nearly 15,000 registered startups, of which over 7,600 are recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

This collaboration is set to create a sustainable talent pipeline from Kerala’s higher education institutions. With research-intensive IP, market opportunities will open up, creating jobs and promoting Kerala as a centre for advanced technology ventures. In recent years, the state government has launched multiple initiatives to expand its startup ecosystem, including student-focused programmes, sector-specific accelerators and international exchange projects.

Why Such Initiatives Matter?
Deep-tech startups often require significant R&D input and longer development cycles than typical tech ventures. Thus, they are viewed as key to future competitiveness in fields such as AI, material sciences, advanced manufacturing and climate technologies. Partnerships like the one with NXTGN Startup Factory provide founders with access to capital, mentorship and research assets that are otherwise challenging to secure at a larger scale.

As Kerala positions itself to attract more deep-tech innovation, such collaborations will diversify the state’s technology base beyond software and services into product-led sectors.
