India and Japan have expanded their strategic partnership with a fresh set of agreements covering artificial intelligence (AI), defence, energy security, healthcare and advanced technologies.

The agreement signals a broader push to strengthen economic and technological cooperation amid shifting global supply chains.

The partnerships were announced following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The summit placed future technologies, semiconductor cooperation and economic security at the centre of bilateral discussions, while both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to building resilient and trusted technology ecosystems.

The meeting comes as India and Japan seek to reduce supply chain risks, strengthen critical technology partnerships and increase cooperation in emerging sectors that are becoming central to long-term economic growth.

AI, semiconductors and critical technologies emerge as key focus areas

Artificial intelligence featured prominently during the summit, with both countries identifying it as one of the strongest pillars of future cooperation.

Both countries agreed to deepen collaboration in AI research, talent development, digital infrastructure and responsible deployment of emerging technologies.

India and Japan also decided to accelerate work in semiconductors, critical minerals and advanced manufacturing. The move builds on ongoing efforts to strengthen semiconductor supply chains and reduce dependence on limited manufacturing hubs.

Several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed during the visit also cover healthcare innovation, clean technologies and research partnerships between institutions in both countries.

The leaders emphasised that trusted technology partnerships would play a critical role in ensuring secure digital infrastructure and future industrial competitiveness.

Defence, energy security and economic resilience move higher on the agenda

Alongside technology, defence cooperation received renewed attention. Both countries agreed to expand collaboration in defence manufacturing, maritime security and strategic technologies as the Indo-Pacific continues to gain geopolitical importance.

Energy security was another major outcome of the summit. India and Japan agreed to increase cooperation in clean energy, critical energy infrastructure and sustainable transition projects, while continuing work on resilient supply chains for strategic resources.

The leaders also discussed strengthening economic security through closer industry partnerships, investment, innovation and greater private-sector participation.

The latest agreements build on an already expanding India-Japan partnership, which has grown steadily across infrastructure, manufacturing, digital technologies and strategic cooperation over the past decade.

The latest India-Japan agreements reinforce a broader trend shaping the global technology landscape. As countries seek trusted partners in AI, semiconductor manufacturing and critical supply chains, collaborations such as these are expected to play an increasingly important role in defining the next phase of innovation and economic resilience.
