Reliance Jio has expanded JioPC, its cloud-based PC service, to consumers across India. The service allows users to access a virtual computer through an existing laptop or desktop, meaning they do not necessarily have to replace ageing hardware to get access to more computing resources.

JioPC was previously available only to JioHome broadband users. It is now being offered as a standalone subscription, and customers can use it regardless of their telecom or broadband provider. For people using three- or four-year-old computers that have begun to slow down, run short of storage or struggle with newer software, JioPC could provide an alternative to buying a new machine.

What is JioPC?

JioPC is a cloud PC that shifts much of the computing workload from the user’s device to Jio’s cloud infrastructure. In simple terms, your existing laptop or desktop becomes the device through which you access the virtual PC. The processing power and cloud storage are provided remotely rather than being limited to the physical hardware inside your machine. This means users do not have to upgrade their processor, RAM or internal storage just to access a more capable computing environment. Jio is particularly targeting older computers that may still work reasonably well but are beginning to show their age.

JioPC plans and pricing

JioPC is available in two plans, with the Ultra version offering more computing power and storage.

JioPC

The standard JioPC plan includes:

  • 4 vCPUs
  • 8GB RAM
  • 500GB cloud storage

It is priced at Rs 1,000 for two months, Rs 2,000 for five months, or Rs 4,000 for 10+2 months.

JioPC Ultra

For users who need additional resources, JioPC Ultra offers:

  • 8 vCPUs
  • 16GB RAM
  • 1TB cloud storage

The plan costs Rs 1,200 for two months, Rs 2,500 for five months, or Rs 5,000 for 10+2 months.

Can JioPC make an old computer faster?

JioPC does not physically make an old laptop or desktop faster. Instead, it moves much of the demanding computing work to the cloud. That distinction is important. Your computer’s processor and RAM remain unchanged, but the cloud PC provides additional computing resources that can be accessed through the existing device.

Jio says this approach can also help older computers handle modern AI-powered applications. According to the company, computers as old as eight years can access the performance needed for such applications through its cloud infrastructure. However, the experience will depend on the quality of the internet connection.

Can you use JioPC on a TV?

Yes. JioPC is not limited to laptops and desktops. Users can access the service through a supported web browser. Jio also allows JioPC to be used on a TV through a Jio Set-Top Box, with a keyboard and mouse connected to the setup. That effectively turns a compatible television into a basic computer display, giving users another way to access the cloud PC.

How long does it take to set up JioPC?

Jio says users can set up or upgrade to JioPC in less than five minutes. There is also no requirement to move existing data to a new computer or install additional hardware. This could make the service appealing to users who want to continue using their current machine without going through the process of buying and configuring a replacement.

Does JioPC work without an internet connection?

No. JioPC requires an internet connection. Because the computing environment is hosted in the cloud, users cannot access the service offline. A stable connection is therefore essential for everyday use. This is one of the key differences between JioPC and a conventional laptop or desktop, where applications and files can continue to be accessed without an internet connection.

Does JioPC run Windows?

No. JioPC runs on Ubuntu/Linux and includes applications such as LibreOffice and browser-based tools. For users who mainly browse the internet, create documents, attend online classes or work with cloud applications, this may not be a major limitation.

However, people who depend on Windows-specific applications should check software compatibility before subscribing. Some programmes designed for Windows may not work in the same way on JioPC.

Is JioPC worth considering instead of buying a new PC?

JioPC can provide access to additional computing resources without requiring an upgrade to the physical hardware. But it also comes with some limitations. You need a reliable internet connection, the service cannot be used offline, and the Ubuntu/Linux environment may not support every Windows application.

For basic productivity and online activities, however, JioPC offers an interesting way to get more mileage out of an older computer.

Instead of replacing a machine simply because its hardware is beginning to struggle, some users may find that moving the heavy computing work to the cloud is enough to keep their existing device useful for a few more years.
