The Indian telecom sector has received a fresh policy update in the Union Budget 2026-27. The centre has proposed an expenditure of ₹73,990 crore for the telecom department. The move mirrors the government’s focus on network expansion, digital connectivity and revival of state-run operators.
A significant part of the budgetary allocation goes to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) as the government steps up efforts to strengthen public telecom infrastructure. The proposed budget will boost telecom services in rural and remote regions while ensuring the continuity of network modernisation initiatives.

BSNL Bags Success in Budget Allocation
BSNL has bagged ₹28,473 crore for the financial year. The allocation makes it the single-largest beneficiary in the telecom budget. The funds will not only support operational sustainability and network upgrades but also expansion plans in underserved areas.
The allocation comes after the government’s ongoing revival strategy for BSNL. The focus is clearly on improving service quality, expanding coverage and reducing financial stress. Officials have maintained that public sector telecom plays an important role in strategic communications and last-mile connectivity.

Telecom Spending Signals Policy Continuity
The overall telecom budget clearly reflects ongoing policy priorities, with an emphasis on infrastructure support rather than new regulatory announcements. The budget strengthens existing priorities, such as network reliability, digital inclusion and support for public-sector telecom assets.
Industry experts noted that sustained government spending remains imperative for operators aiming to continue leading market expansion.
