India’s telecom exports have increased by 72 per cent over the last five years, showcasing the sector’s resilience and potential. In a statement to Parliament, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted the country’s growing manufacturing and export capabilities in the telecommunications sector, aiming to foster a sense of achievement and optimism among stakeholders and the public.

Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, Scindia said, “telecom exports grew from ₹10,907 crore in FY2020-21 to ₹18,406 crore in FY2024- 25”. The figures reflect sustained growth driven by policy support, domestic manufacturing incentives and rising global demand for Indian telecom products.

Exports Surge, Imports Remain Stable

While exports have seen significant growth, telecom imports remain stable at ₹51,000 crore approximately, indicating a strengthening of domestic manufacturing and a reduced reliance on overseas equipment. The minister highlighted that this trend reflects the success of initiatives such as Make in India, Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and broader reforms aimed at boosting indigenous manufacturing of telecom equipment and network infrastructure, fostering confidence in India’s self-reliance.

Expansion of Telecom Infrastructure

The Union Minister also highlighted the ongoing expansion of India’s telecom infrastructure, particularly in the rollout of 5G services. “5G connectivity has been extended to 767 of 778 districts across the country, improving digital access and supporting the adoption of advanced communication technologies,” he said, emphasising the country’s forward-looking development and inspiring confidence in India’s digital transformation. The growth of telecom networks and exports is expected to continue, but addressing potential challenges like global market fluctuations and supply chain disruptions will be crucial to sustain this momentum and reassure stakeholders of long-term stability.

Global Competitiveness on the Rise

Industry experts suggest that the growth in telecom exports reflects India’s increasing competitiveness in areas such as network equipment, optical fibre and wireless communication products. As global companies diversify their supply chains, India is rising as a key manufacturing and export hub for telecom technology.
The government has reiterated its commitment to sector growth through policies such as the PLI scheme and Make in India, which provide specific incentives and support mechanisms, thereby fostering a conducive environment for sustained investment, research, and infrastructure expansion.
