Nokia has inaugurated its largest research and development (R&D) facility for fixed network technologies at SIPCOT Siruseri in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The Finnish telecom equipment maker said the new centre represents its biggest global facility dedicated to fixed broadband innovation.
The investment stands at ₹270 crore ($34 million), up from an earlier commitment of ₹220 crore and marks a major expansion of Nokia’s technology footprint in India.

Expanded Facility and Strategic Focus
The Chennai facility will focus on next-generation broadband technologies, including optical networks and fixed wireless access. It is designed to act as a global testbed for advanced solutions covering high-speed fibre and related network technologies.
Nokia said the centre supports its global fixed network portfolio and will serve international markets from India.
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T R B Rajaa highlighted the expanded investment and the state’s role in facilitating the project, which stemmed from a memorandum of understanding signed during Chief Minister M K Stalin’s visit to the United States in 2024.

Employment Creation and Local Investment Impact
The facility is expected to create more than 200 high-end engineering jobs in the region, adding to Nokia’s existing workforce in Tamil Nadu. This also includes nearly 1,000 engineers.
The company already has operational ties with major Indian telecom operators through network equipment and services. Industry analysts suggest the expansion signals India’s growing role as a technology and innovation hub, with Chennai emerging as a key location for R&D in telecom and broadband systems.
