The Assam-Japan partnership is looking to deepen economic cooperation as the state seeks investment in semiconductors, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing.
The push comes as India expands its semiconductor ambitions and strengthens industrial ties with trusted global partners under the broader India-Japan strategic relationship.
The initiative was highlighted during a high-level meeting between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and senior Japanese government representatives, during which both sides discussed new opportunities across technology, infrastructure and sustainable industries.
Assam also pitched itself as a natural gateway connecting India with Southeast Asia through the country’s Act East Policy.
Semiconductors and clean energy emerge as investment priorities
Semiconductors formed a key part of the discussions as Assam outlined its plans to become a destination for future technology manufacturing.
The state government said it is working to create an investment-friendly environment, backed by improved infrastructure, policy support and industrial development.
Clean energy also featured centrally. Assam invited Japanese companies to explore opportunities in renewable energy, green technologies and sustainable industrial projects as industries increasingly shift towards lower-carbon operations.
The talks also covered manufacturing, logistics, skill development and innovation, reflecting efforts to build long-term industrial partnerships rather than isolated investments.

Assam pitches its strategic location to Japanese investors
Officials stressed Assam’s geographical advantage, describing the state as India’s gateway to the Northeast and neighbouring Southeast Asian markets. Improved road, rail, inland waterways and air connectivity were presented as key strengths for businesses looking to establish regional operations.
The state also highlighted its expanding industrial ecosystem, the availability of natural resources and its growing focus on ease of doing business. These factors, the government believes, could make Assam an attractive destination for Japanese manufacturers looking to diversify their supply chains.
The engagement adds to the growing momentum in India-Japan economic cooperation, particularly as both countries seek stronger collaboration in resilient supply chains, advanced manufacturing and clean technologies.
While no investment commitments were announced during the discussions, the dialogue signals Assam’s intent to secure a larger role in India’s semiconductor and green manufacturing ecosystem.
India’s semiconductor drive is increasingly moving ahead of traditional manufacturing hubs, with states attracting global investors.
Assam’s outreach to Japan signals a broader effort to position Northeast India within future supply chains for electronics, clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
