The global memory chip shortage has begun affecting the availability of Apple’s bestselling MacBook Air, signalling that supply pressures are now extending beyond the company’s desktop lineup. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple had already been dealing with memory shortages impacting the Mac mini and Mac Studio. However, the supply crunch has now reached the MacBook Air, with retailers reporting tighter inventory than in previous months.

Customers ordering a new MacBook Air directly from Apple’s website are now facing longer delivery times. Many configurations are scheduled to ship only in the second half of August, while some variants are not expected to be available until September, highlighting the growing impact of the global memory shortage. The supply constraints are being driven largely by soaring demand for memory chips from AI companies. As AI infrastructure investments continue to accelerate worldwide, manufacturers are prioritising high-performance memory for data centres and AI servers, putting pressure on supplies for consumer electronics.
To ease the situation, Apple is reportedly taking several measures. Gurman says the company is increasing prices in some cases and expanding its sourcing strategy by purchasing memory from Chinese suppliers to secure additional supply. The shortage has also influenced Apple’s marketing strategy. The company reportedly postponed its annual back-to-school promotion from its usual June launch. At the same time, this year’s campaign places greater emphasis on the entry-level MacBook Pro rather than the MacBook Air. Apple’s promotional material now includes a notice stating that the “MacBook Air is subject to availability,” reflecting the ongoing supply challenges.
