MediaTek has signalled a strong willingness to deepen its engagement with India’s semiconductor ecosystem, saying it is open to sourcing a larger share of its chips from the country as local manufacturing and consumption scale up.

Anku Jain, Managing Director of MediaTek, said the shift would depend on how quickly India is able to build a cost-efficient and reliable chip production environment. “If local consumption and manufacturing of chips grow and the ecosystem becomes robust enough to support cost-effective production, it would make strong business sense to move more assembly or manufacturing to India,” he noted.

As a fabless semiconductor company, MediaTek relies on external foundry partners for chip fabrication. The company currently commands an estimated 45–47% share of India’s smartphone chipset market, underscoring its deep presence in the country’s fast-growing mobile ecosystem. Jain said MediaTek is closely watching the emergence of domestic chipmakers and remains open to collaborating with them. “It’s exciting to see multiple companies working on chip manufacturing in India. If they are able to meet our requirements, we would be very keen to work with them,” he said.

He also pointed out that India’s decision to begin its semiconductor journey with mature process nodes such as 28 nanometres was a pragmatic one. These nodes are significantly less complex to manufacture than advanced technologies like 6nm or 4nm, which are typically used in high-end flagship smartphones. According to Jain, building capabilities at these levels can help lay a stable foundation before moving to more cutting-edge processes.

MediaTek’s Footprint in India

Beyond manufacturing, MediaTek has already established a substantial research and development footprint in India. The company’s local R&D teams have been working across computing, connectivity and software domains for several years. Jain said nearly 90 per cent of MediaTek’s workforce in India is focused on global R&D, collaborating closely with design centres worldwide. “These teams contribute across the entire system-on-chip development lifecycle, working on both hardware and software,” he said. “Their role spans computing, connectivity and the integration of AI features, making India a critical part of our global innovation efforts.”
