Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the HCL–Foxconn semiconductor manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh. Attending the event via video conferencing, he said the moment marks a key step in India’s push to build a domestic semiconductor ecosystem.

The facility, to be set up in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region, is part of the Centre’s broader strategy to strengthen electronics manufacturing, reduce import dependence and position India as a global semiconductor hub.

Project Aligned With India’s Semiconductor Push

The Prime Minister, in his address, noted that the project is a sign of the growing global confidence in India’s manufacturing capabilities and policy stability. He also stated that semiconductor manufacturing is important for sectors ranging from electronics and automobiles to defence and digital infrastructure.

HCL–Foxconn have joined hands to develop a unit under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), a flagship programme aimed at attracting investments across chip fabrication, packaging and testing. The government has positioned the mission as a milestone of its ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.

Officials present at the ceremony said the project is expected to strengthen supply chains and support India’s rapidly expanding electronics manufacturing sector.

Boost for Uttar Pradesh’s Electronics Manufacturing Ambitions

The semiconductor unit is expected to add momentum to Uttar Pradesh’s emergence as an electronics and technology manufacturing hub. The state government has been actively courting investments in semiconductors, data centres and electronics assembly, supported by infrastructure development along the Yamuna Expressway corridor.

Industry leaders and senior government officials from the Centre and the state attended the event. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate employment and attract ancillary industries to the region.
