Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has crossed 20 GW of installed renewable energy capacity, marking the fastest and largest renewable energy capacity expansion achieved by any company in India to date.
The milestone gives AGEL enough renewable energy generation capacity to power more than 9 million households annually. Its plants are expected to generate over 52 billion units (kWh) of electricity every year, roughly matching the annual electricity consumption of New York City or the combined annual power demand of Mumbai and New Delhi.
Carbon offset equivalent to 1.77 billion trees
The company’s 20 GW renewable portfolio is expected to offset more than 37 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. According to AGEL, this is equivalent to the carbon absorbed by 1.772 billion trees or removing 8.1 million passenger vehicles from the roads each year.

Diverse renewable energy portfolio
AGEL’s operational renewable energy portfolio now includes:
- 14.2 GW of solar power
- 2.7 GW of wind power
- 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid projects
The company has also commissioned 3.55 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). AGEL says this is the largest battery storage deployment outside China and among the fastest executed globally.
Battery storage to play a bigger role
Highlighting the growing importance of energy storage, Sagar Adani, Executive Director, AGEL, said:
“As renewable energy assumes a larger share of India’s power mix, battery storage is becoming central to delivering reliable, dispatchable clean power.”
AGEL plans to commission 10 GWh of battery storage during FY2027 and expand its battery storage portfolio to 50 GWh over the next five years. The expansion will support the company’s target of reaching 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Khavda project remains AGEL’s growth engine
The company’s next phase of expansion is centred on its Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Kutch, Gujarat, which is being developed as the world’s largest renewable energy plant. Spread across 538 square kilometres of barren land, the project is designed to deliver 30 GW of renewable energy capacity. The site covers an area five times the size of Paris and is nearly as large as Mumbai.
AGEL has already commissioned 9.5 GW of solar capacity at Khavda, representing more than 30% of the project’s planned capacity, making it a key contributor to the company’s long-term renewable energy growth strategy.
