Tata Power Targets for India’s First Private Nuclear Power Plant by 2032

Tata Power plans to build its first private nuclear power plant by 2032–33, with construction expected to begin in 2028 across shortlisted Indian sites.

Tata Power is planning to build its first nuclear power plant by 2032–33, marking a major step into India’s emerging private nuclear energy sector. The company expects construction activity to begin in early 2028, subject to the government finalising the regulatory framework for private participation in nuclear power.

Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Praveer Sinha said the company is targeting 2032–33 to have its first nuclear plant ready. Speaking to Bloomberg Television, Sinha said construction could begin in the early part of 2028. “We are targeting 2032-2033; we will have the first of the nuclear plants ready in the private sector,” Sinha said.

The company has already shortlisted potential locations for its nuclear projects in at least three states. According to Sinha, Tata Power has identified sites in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat, with geotechnical studies already underway. The company is also working on its plans in coordination with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL).

Tata Power’s nuclear plans come as India moves to open its civil nuclear power sector to private companies. The move is aimed at expanding the country’s nuclear generation capacity and supporting its long-term energy security and decarbonisation goals.

However, the company’s project timeline will depend on the final regulatory framework. Key issues, including long-term uranium supplies, pricing and the approval process, are still being worked out. Sinha expects the approval process to take around 12 to 14 months once the relevant rules are finalised.

India currently has around 8.8 GW of installed nuclear power capacity, with nuclear energy accounting for about 3% of the country’s electricity generation. The government has set an ambitious target of increasing nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047, creating significant opportunities for private-sector participation in the industry.

Tata Power’s entry into nuclear energy comes as the country looks to meet rising electricity demand while reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. With the growth of data centres, artificial intelligence and other energy-intensive industries, reliable low-carbon power is expected to become increasingly important.

The company’s planned nuclear project could therefore become an important milestone in India’s push to expand nuclear power and bring private players into the sector. If Tata Power’s current timeline stays on track, its first nuclear plant could be among the earliest privately developed nuclear power projects in the country.
