Andhra Pradesh Railways Go Fully Electric; New Zone to Strengthen Connectivity
Andhra Pradesh reaches 100% railway electrification; South Coastal Railway zone to launch June 1, 2026 with record ₹10,134 crore allocation.

Andhra Pradesh has achieved 100% electrification of its railway network, placing it among the leading regions in railway modernisation in the country. Announcing the milestone, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Government of India, outlined a broader set of developments aimed at strengthening rail infrastructure and connectivity across the state.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, the minister said a Gazette Notification for the formation of the South Coastal Railway will come into effect from June 1, 2026. The new zone is expected to enhance railway administration and improve operational efficiency.

Vaishnaw also pointed to a sharp rise in funding, with Andhra Pradesh receiving a record allocation of ₹10,134 crore. This marks a significant increase from the ₹886 crore earlier allocated to the combined states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Railway projects worth around ₹1.06 lakh crore are currently underway in the state, focused on improving connectivity to ports, major cities, and key tourism destinations, reflecting a sustained push toward infrastructure-led growth.

At the ground level, redevelopment work is progressing across 74 railway stations, a move the minister described as a major step in upgrading passenger infrastructure.

He also shared updates on key infrastructure works:

  • 832 flyovers and underpasses have been completed
  • 299 are currently under construction
  • 1,759 km of railway track has been laid
  • 3,300 km of track is under development

Together, these developments signal an accelerated phase of railway expansion and modernisation in Andhra Pradesh.
