India has entered the race to develop AI-powered combat aircraft. Bengaluru-based startup Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace (FWDA) has revealed its new autonomous fighter concept called FWD Supreme. The aircraft is designed to fly, identify threats, and carry out combat missions without a pilot inside. The company plans to fly its first 250-kilogram technology demonstrator before the end of the third quarter of 2026.

FWD Supreme Designed for Autonomous Combat
FWD Supreme is different from traditional drones because it is being built to make tactical decisions on its own after launch. It can navigate, identify threats, and work with other unmanned aircraft without depending on constant instructions from a ground operator. According to the company, this reduces the risk of communication systems being jammed during combat.
‘Mobbing Doctrine’ Uses Swarm Strategy
FWDA says the aircraft is based on its ‘Mobbing Doctrine’. The idea is inspired by the way smaller animals work together to challenge a bigger opponent. Instead of sending one expensive fighter, several AI-powered aircraft can fly together as a swarm. Even if some are lost during a mission, the remaining aircraft can continue the operation and put pressure on enemy forces.
Two Versions Under Development
The first version, FWD Supreme Lite, is a 250-kg technology demonstrator. It will test autonomous flight, AI-based navigation, threat detection, and teamwork with other unmanned aircraft. It is expected to reach speeds of up to Mach 0.9 and have an operational range of 700–1,000 kilometres.

The final version, FWD Supreme Heavy, will be a one-tonne autonomous combat aircraft. It is being developed for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, precision strike, and collaborative combat missions in contested areas.
