The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) will introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled depot management system across its bus depots to improve safety, transparency and operational monitoring.

The system will be rolled out in 115 depots over the next two years under the Centre’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) scheme. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has sanctioned more than ₹30 crore for the project. The corporation operates a fleet of over 14,000 buses across the state.

Officials said the initiative aims to digitise depot operations and shift key processes to real-time online monitoring.

AI-Driven System to Digitise Depot Operations

Under the new Integrated Depot Management System, depot-level records will be maintained digitally rather than in manual registers.

Currently, depot managers record details such as crew deployment, bus availability, fuel usage and inventory manually. With the AI-enabled system, these records will be uploaded online in real time.

Transport officials said the system will help track fleet operations, fuel consumption and expenditure more accurately. It is expected to reduce discrepancies, improve oversight and make depot functioning more transparent.

The move is part of a broader effort to modernise the state’s public transport infrastructure through digital systems and data-driven monitoring.

Focus on Passenger Safety and Operational Efficiency

“The new platform will support better decision-making by providing real-time operational data. The initiative is intended to improve passenger safety and service quality while strengthening transparency in the management of the state-run bus network.”

said UPSRTC officials

The system is expected to reduce fuel pilferage, cut maintenance costs and minimise wastage across depots. It also supports fuel optimisation and lower emissions by improving fleet performance monitoring.

Once implemented, UPSRTC will be among the first state transport undertakings in India to deploy an AI-driven depot management framework at this scale.
