Growing Startup Ecosystem and Impact
‘Startup India’ was launched on January 16, 2016, to nurture innovation, promote entrepreneurship and turn India into a nation of ‘job creators’ rather than ‘job seekers’.
Each year, January 16 is observed as National Startup Day to highlight progress.
Over the past decade, the number of officially recognised startups has grown sharply from a few hundred to more than 2 lakh. This is making India one of the world’s largest startup ecosystems. These firms have become significant drivers of employment and innovation across sectors and regions.
The initial programme offered tax exemptions, simplified regulatory compliance and funding support through schemes like ‘the Fund of Funds for Startups’.
Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities gained the most popularity, highlighting broader participation. Government data indicates rising ecosystem outputs, including 21 lakh (approximately) job creation. The initiative’s scale can be estimated from the noted growth in unicorn startups, valued at hundreds of billions of dollars.

New Phase: Focus on AI, Deep Tech and Corporate Linkages
“The next phase of Startup India will prioritise alignment with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), deep tech and advanced manufacturing”.
said officials at Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT)
The strategy aims to bring startups closer to corporate partners, build cost-effective solutions and strengthen industrial innovation. This shift reflects broader government efforts to deepen market access and strengthen startup partnerships.
A planned programme for National Startup Day included an interaction between the Prime Minister and startup representatives on the evolution and future direction of the ecosystem. Government reports also highlighted sectoral diversity in the ecosystem, with nearly half of recognised startups emerging from non-metro cities and a growing share of enterprises led or co-led by women.
“Startup India initiative revolutionised Bharat’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. As we move on with our Viksit Bharat 2047 journey, startups will remain central to building a prosperous, inclusive & globally competitive India,” said Piyush Goyal, Union Commerce and Industry Minister
As India enters a new phase with Viksit Bharat 2047, the Startup Hub Expo 2026 emerges as a timely and powerful platform that reflects this national momentum.
Co-located with the 33rd Convergence India Expo 2026 from March 23-25, the event is a key touchpoint for India’s evolving startup ecosystem, bringing together over 350 cutting-edge startups, investors and industry stakeholders under one roof.
From Smart Cities (ICT), Telecom and Fintech to AI, IoT, Embedded Tech and beyond, the expo will spotlight innovation that aligns closely with government priorities, corporate collaboration and future-ready technologies. Positioned as India’s biggest startup and tech expo, Startup Hub Expo 2026 is set to transform into one of the grandest startup exhibitions the country has seen, driving visibility, partnerships and growth for the next generation of Indian innovation.
