The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati will introduce diploma-level training and BTech-level engineering programmes in semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) under a new partnership with Tata Electronics. The initiative will combine classroom teaching with practical training and research opportunities to prepare students for jobs in India’s semiconductor industry.
The institute has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tata Electronics to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on its campus. According to IIT Guwahati, the centre will focus on semiconductor packaging education, skills development and research, while extending specialised training opportunities to students across Assam and the Northeast.

What Will the IIT Guwahati Semiconductor Courses Cover?
IIT Guwahati will lead the development and delivery of the programmes, with Tata Electronics jointly developing the course content and specialised training modules.
The curriculum will cover semiconductor ATMP, including chip assembly and packaging, as well as testing and marking. The programmes will combine academic instruction with practical training to help students develop skills relevant to semiconductor manufacturing.
Students will also have opportunities to undertake training at Tata Electronics. Undergraduate and postgraduate students can participate in collaborative research projects covering semiconductor packaging, assembly, testing and related technologies.

Centre of Excellence to Extend Training Across Northeast India
The partnership will identify engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics that can participate in the initiative. Students from these institutions will gain access to hands-on semiconductor training, while faculty members will receive training to strengthen teaching capabilities at their respective institutions.
The proposed Centre of Excellence will serve as the hub for academic and research activities under the partnership. It is intended to connect technical education with industry requirements and make specialised semiconductor training accessible beyond IIT Guwahati.
The initiative supports efforts to develop a skilled workforce for India’s semiconductor industry. By involving educational institutions across the region, the partnership also aims to build a broader talent pipeline in Assam and the Northeast.

What the Partnership Means for India’s Semiconductor Workforce
The collaboration brings industry-linked education, practical training and research together under one initiative. Its reach beyond IIT Guwahati could also help strengthen semiconductor teaching capabilities at other technical institutions in the region.
The key measure to watch will be how effectively the programmes translate classroom learning into practical skills for semiconductor assembly, testing and packaging roles.
