Telangana Pushes for AI-GIS to Tighten Solid Waste Monitoring Across Urban Local Bodies
Telangana integrates AI and GIS technologies into solid waste management to enable real-time tracking, improve efficiency and strengthen urban sanitation systems.

Telangana has rolled out artificial intelligence (AI)- and geographic information system (GIS)-based monitoring within its solid waste management framework, aiming to improve tracking, accountability, and service delivery across urban local bodies.

The move is part of a broader push to digitise sanitation operations and ensure real-time oversight of waste collection and disposal.

AI Integration Backs Waste Tracking and Compliance

AI tools are now being used to monitor waste collection routes, identify service gaps, and flag irregularities in real time. The system enables authorities to track vehicle movement, sanitation workers’ attendance and adherence to assigned schedules.

Data generated by AI platforms is used to read performance metrics and support decision-making at the municipal level. The deployment will reduce manual intervention and improve response times for waste collection complaints.

The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to modernise urban governance through smart technologies, with a focus on transparency and operational efficiency.

GIS Mapping Enables Real-Time Monitoring of Urban Infrastructure

Alongside AI, GIS technology is being used to map sanitation infrastructure, including garbage collection points, transfer stations and dumping yards. Officials said the mapping enables better route planning and resource allocation based on population density and waste-generation patterns.

The system also provides a visual interface for monitoring field operations, helping civic bodies identify underserved areas and optimise coverage. Integration of GIS data with central dashboards is expected to enhance coordination between departments and improve overall waste management outcomes.

Authorities said the combined use of AI and GIS will support long-term planning and help urban local bodies meet sanitation benchmarks under national cleanliness programmes.
