Delhi’s commuter landscape is set to change from the start of the new year 2026, as Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperative-based taxi service, is set to launch. Prepared for a citywide launch on January 1, this app-based cab service is positioned as a domestic alternative to established ride-hailing platforms such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The service aims to offer fairer earnings for drivers and a more transparent experience for passengers.

Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited will operate the platform and follow a zero-commission model, a sharp departure from the aggregator-driven systems that dominate the market. Instead of paying high commissions, drivers under the Bharat Taxi framework are expected to retain around 80 per cent of their earnings, with the remaining portion directed towards cooperative operations and welfare measures.

Bharat Taxi will be available through Android and iOS applications, offering multiple mobility options including cars, auto-rickshaws and bike taxis. The booking process mirrors familiar app-based services, allowing users to register via mobile number, enter pickup and drop locations, select a vehicle type and track rides in real time.

The service promises a transparent fare structure, multilingual app support, 24×7 customer assistance and real-time vehicle tracking. Safety features include verified driver onboarding and options for riders to share trip details with trusted contacts.

Ahead of its launch, nearly 56,000 drivers in Delhi have already registered with the platform, indicating strong interest from the driver community. Trial runs have reportedly been completed in the capital, while pilot projects are underway in other cities, with plans to expand operations to more than 20 locations nationwide.
